The guilt died single basiert auf dem portugiesischen Sprichwort „A culpa morreu solteira“, das verwendet wird, wenn niemand Verantwortung für ein Ereignis übernimmt oder sich keine eindeutige Schuld zuweisen lässt.

Ana Loureiro verbindet Elemente der portugiesischen Gebärdensprache mit symbolischen Objekten und untersucht, wie Sprache, Gesten und kollektive Erinnerung miteinander verwoben sind. Gleichzeitig hinterfragt die Arbeit die menschliche Tendenz, in komplexen Situationen nach einer einzelnen verantwortlichen Person zu suchen, und lädt dazu ein, über Verantwortung, Schuld und Unschuld nachzudenken.

In this artwork, the artist draws from Portuguese Sign Language and combines it with symbolic objects to reflect on the relationship between language, gesture, and collective memory.

The artwork explores how proverbs emerge from shared experiences within a particular cultural landscape, carrying values, beliefs, and social attitudes across generations.

The title, The guilt died single, is the English translation of the Portuguese proverb „A culpa morreu solteira“, commonly used in situations where no one accepts responsibility for a negative event, or when it is impossible to identify who is at fault. By translating this proverb through sign language and material elements, the work invites viewers to unravel the subliminal message.

At the same time, the piece offers a critique of the persistent human tendency to search for someone to blame. It questions the social obsession with assigning guilt to a specific target in circumstances where responsibility is diffuse, shared, or simply absent.

The work encourages reflection on the complexity of accountability and notions of innocence and blame.
