This series explores popular (pagan) festivities through painting, focusing on the transformative power of masks, folklore, and communal rituals such as romerías. Rather than documenting specific events, the works Approach these traditions from an imaginative and celebratory perspective.
Historically, these festivities created a temporary space of suspension—moments in which social norms could be loosened, and identities could be reconfigured. Through masks and costumes, people were able to step outside imposed roles, briefly escaping the moral and behavioral constraints shaped by the Catholic Church. This sense of
freedom—playful, subversive, and collective—runs throughout the series.
The paintings are saturated with color and populated by invented figures and hybrid masks. These characters do not belong to a fixed folklore; instead, they emerge from a reinterpretation of tradition, blending memory, imagination, and visual invention. The aim is not to preserve folklore as something static, but to reactivate it as a living, mutable language.
Materially, the works combine oil painting with textile elements such as embroidery and thread. This Integration introduces a tactile dimension that connects the pictorial surface with domestic and craft-based practices historically associated with popular culture. In addition, graphic motifs drawn from traditional embroidery in various regions of Spain are incorporated through printing processes, using knitted fragments and other textile materials.
Through this interplay between painting and textile, image and imprint, the series proposes a vision of festivity as a space of both resistance and creation—where identity becomes fluid, and tradition is reimagined through gesture, color, and material.
